Chris Adams today challenged Matt Prior to prove the England selectors wrong on the biggest stage of all.

Prior was at his destructive best yesterday as he blasted Glamorgan's bowling attack to all parts of the County Ground just six days before Sussex travel to Lord's for the C&G Trophy final.

His exhilirating innings of 141 from just 86 balls ensured the Sharks cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket victory with eight overs to spare which saw them leapfrog their opponents into second place in the Pro40 League.

It was a breathtaking return to form for the wicketkeeper/batsman who has struggled for runs in the one-day format since losing his place in the England side following a disappointing winter in India.

Now skipper Adams is hoping he can continue in the same vein against Lancashire on Saturday and force the England selectors to reconsider.

Adams said: "Matt will be feeling great going into the final after an innings like that. By his own admission he has had a poor one -day season but he scored a terrific 80 to no avail against Essex last week and that seems to have got him off and running.

"He is a massive confidence player so this will help him a lot. When he is in that kind of form there is no bowler in the country who can contain him.

"When you see him batting like that it does make you wonder why he is not playing for England. It is bemusing that he is not in a 30-man squad when he was in the starting 11 in the winter.

"He is a big stage player though and there would be no better occasion for him to underline his credentials than in the final on Saturday."

Although Prior undoubtedly deserved the plaudits for Sussex's third victory from four Pro40 games it could all have been so different if Dan Cherry had held onto a regulation catch when he was on 15.

Prior made Cherry pay for that mistake in the most emphatic style. He raced to 50 off just 36 balls and then blazed to his third one-day century off another 32 deliveries.

He smashed former England spinner Robert Croft for two huge sixes off consecutive balls before finally holing out at backward point as he attempted to reverse sweep Dean Cosker.

Richard Montgomerie was the perfect foil and his knock of 51 not out seemed pedestrian by comparison despite coming off only 60 balls.

When Prior was out Sussex were just three short of the revised total Glamorgan had set them of 197 in an innings reduced to 33 overs by three rain interuptions.

The visitors should have made more after the top four all got starts but the introduction of Mike Yardy halted their momentum.

Yardy picked up wickets on the final ball of his first over and the first of his second and although there was no hat-trick he had done enough to ensure Glamorgan's total was no where near Prior-proof.

Lancashire moved level with Sussex at the top of the County Championship after claiming 11 points from a rain affected draw with Middlesex yesterday.
