Ally McCoist has revealed his Scotland squad snub for the World Cup in 1998 still haunts him every day.

The Rangers legend was not included in the 22-man squad for the tournament with Craig Brown selecting five other striking options for the tournament.

McCoist had scored 15 goals in his final season at Rangers but missed out on travelling to France as part of the Scotland national team set-up.

For the fan favourite pundit, it was his worst moment in football and led him to tears.

Recalling the painful memory, McCoist admitted it's still something he thinks about every day.

On talkSPORT, he said: “It’s the worst I’ve ever felt in football. The worst I’ve felt by an absolute mile. I was in tears.

“You realise there are far more important things, and there are. But at that time, that was the most important thing and it’s the worst I’ve ever felt in football by some considerable distance because I knew I should have gone. 100 percent I should have gone.

“You’re talking to me and we’re having this discussion and I’ve said Harry Kane will think about that penalty for the next five years. I think about not going to the World Cup in France every day. Every day, honestly.”

Brown now looks back on his selection with regret and previously conceded he should have taken McCoist to the tournament.

Instead, Brown opted for Kevin Gallacher, Gordon Durie, Darren Jackson, Simon Donnelly and Scott Booth.

Reflecting on McCoist's squad snub, Brown told BBC Scotland in 2018: "It's with great regret with hindsight that I made that decision. It rankles with me.

"I spoke at a dinner last week and Alistair [McCoist] was there. I publicly apologised because I felt I'd done the wrong thing.

"He knows it and I know it. I've got to accept it and live with it I'm afraid."

Scotlan faced Brazil, Norway and Morocco at the tournament finals picking up just one point from the three matches.

The national team drew 1-1 with Norway but suffered a 2-1 loss to Brazil and fell to a 3-0 defeat against Morocco.
