Albion's club record-breaking deal to sign Alex Pritchard from Spurs has been hijacked at the eleventh hour by Championship rivals Norwich City.
The Seagulls had agreed a fee with Tottenham and personal terms with Pritchard and his agent.
The deal has been undone by an apparent last-ditch illegal approach for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder.
Albion cannot compete with the wages on offer from Norwich, who benefit from parachute payments after relegation from the Premier League.
It now seems likely Pritchard will join the Canaries instead, although fuming Albion have not entirely given up hope of still landing a player manager Chris Hughton planned to use in the No.10 role behind a main striker.
