Johanna Konta has vowed to continue playing aggressive tennis after tasting victory for the first time at Wimbledon.

Konta ended a run of four straight defeats in the first round at SW19 when she overcame Monica Puig 6-1 7-5 yesterday.

The British No.1 from Eastbourne pumped herself up for her clash with Puig by watching hardman Liam Neeson in Taken 2.

And she is determined to keep taking the fight to her opponent when she meets 2014 runner-up Eugenie Bouchard – who beat Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3 6-4 yesterday – in the second round on Centre Court today.

Konta said: “It’s important to get the first strike in on this surface, it’s a fast surface and I think that’s where most points are won.

“It’s about staying offensive and trying to dictate out there. I’m very happy with how I’m able to serve and return.”

Konta had led 2-1 in the second set when rain brought a halt to her match with Puig on Tuesday and struggled to find her rhythm when the match resumed on Court One.

She lost the first three games when the rain finally cleared at 5pm but recovered to win five of the next six to see off the world No. 36 from Puerto Rico.

Konta – the first British woman to be seeded at Wimbledon for 32 years – added: “I think it was mainly about seeing the funny side of things (the rain delay), just keeping it light-hearted, not really staying too intense for such a long period of time.

“That can be very exhausting. Last night I went back. I don’t even remember what I did. I watched a bit of TV, made some dinner, joked around. I think there was some tennis on still. Oh, and then we watched Taken 2.

“I’m very happy with my performance.”
