Chris Eubank Jr has responded to Nick Blackwell’s criticism by revealing his “shock” at the fighter’s comments and offering his British middleweight title belt as a gesture of goodwill.

Blackwell had accused the Eubanks of being “inhuman” for staging a press conference to discuss their fight in March while he was in hospital in an induced coma.

Blackwell had collapsed after his tenth-round defeat through suffering a bleed on the skull. He has since recovered but is unhappy the Eubanks ignored his family’s requests not to hold that press conference while he remained in a coma.

Brighton fighter Eubank Jr, 26, said on Good Morning Britain: “I was shocked when I first heard the things he had been saying because we had a little talk on social media on Twitter.

“He said everything was okay and that there was no hard feelings but the truth is that I ended the guy’s career, I’ve stopped him being able to make a living.

“Was it intentional? No. Did I want any of this to happen? Of course not.”

Gesturing to his British title belt, he added: “I wanted to come see him because I had something for him and that something is my British title belt.

“I felt the fight was a great fight, I felt he held himself amazingly, it was a beautiful fight. His career’s over now, so as a gesture I was going to come to the hospital and present him with the belt.

“The guy’s a true warrior, regardless of what’s been said, the only thing that’s important is that he is now okay, he’s with his family and he can live a normal life with no restrictions. I believe that the belt is a goodwill gesture, I’m still ready to come and give it to him.”

Trowbridge’s Blackwell claimed Eubank Jr had gone out partying to celebrate victory while he fought for his life.

But Eubank refuted the claim as “100 per cent not true” and revealed he went for a meal with family and friends.

Blackwell’s friend and former promoter, Mick Hennessy believes Eubank Jr’s offer of the belt is flawed and nothing but a publicity stunt.

Hennessy said: “On the face of it, it seems like a really kind gesture from Chris but, unfortunately, he has no right to make those sort of claims. The belt he currently has isn’t his to give away.

“Once he has made three defences of the title, and won it outright, he can do what he wants with it. It will be his to keep. But, until then, anything he says in relation to handing the belt over to Nick has to be viewed, in my opinion, as pure opportunism.”
