Skipper Luke Wright believes Sussex have pulled off a major coup after signing England spinner Danny Briggs.

Briggs has penned a three-year deal at Hove having agreed an early release from his contract at Hampshire which was due to run until the end of next season.

Sussex moved for the 24-year-old left-armer to help fill the void in their limited-overs team created by the retirement of Mike Yardy.

Wright rates Briggs as one of the top one-day spinner in the country but also believes he can play a role in Sussex’s bid to make an instant return to division one of the Championship following relegation.

Wright said: “Danny is a fantastic signing and one I am really excited about.

“We are signing a young England international who is arguably the best one-day spinner in the country and is young enough to develop into a top four-day bowler too.

“He is a hard worker and a tough competitor and I look forward to playing with him rather than against him.”

Briggs was Hampshire’s leading wicket-taker in the NatWest T20 Blast last season with 18 scalps and helped the county reach Twenty20 finals day for the fourth year in a row.

However, he saw his opportunities limited in four-day and 50-over cricket due to the presence of Liam Dawson and the emergence of Sussex-born leg-spinner Mason Crane.

He has taken 191 first class wickets and as well as strengthening Sussex’s one-day team will also boost their spinning options in the Championship following the release of Ashar Zaidi.

Briggs, who has won seven caps for England in Twenty20 internationals and played one ODI, said: “I'm looking forward to joining Sussex and working with the players and coaching staff at Hove.

“I'm really grateful that Hampshire are letting me leave early and am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.”
