ENGLAND's Richard Wigglesworth admitted he couldn't put his emotions into words having been knocked out of the Rugby World Cup with a game left to play in the group stages.

The replacement scrum half was one of only two players put forward by England to face the media in the aftermath of their 33-13 drubbing at the hands of old foes Australia.

World Cup protocol states each side must send at least 10 players through the mixed media area for interviews, but only the Saracen and flanker Tom Wood emerged.

Wigglesworth said: "Words won't do it justice just how sad that dressing room is.

"We're devastated and we're just sorry we let everyone down."

When pressed on where it went wrong for England, the former Sale man conceded his team were second best at the breakdown.

He said: "We turned over too much ball and they turned over a lot of our ball, so credit to them for doing it.

"We needed to be better to hold onto it and they had enough ball in our half to hurt us and we didn't have enough in theirs.

"They slowed ours [possession] down and we couldn't do the same to them.

"We knew that threat was coming, but they were outstanding.

"We're massively disappointed and credit to the Australians."

Wigglesworth has been unlucky not to get more rugby after injecting some venom into England's performances with three cameo appearances against Fiji, Wales and Australia.

Instead, he's played second to an out-of-sorts Ben Youngs, who was once again put under pressure behind a scrum going backwards.

Wigglesworth, talking of the scrum, said: "It was disappointing like a lot of the facets of the game really.

"We wanted to get a foothold there and that just didn't happen for us."
