Sussex coach Mark Robinson believes Will Beer can put himself in the frame for an England call-up if he maintains his form in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Beer will be looking to build on man-of-the-match displays in his last two games against Somerset and Gloucestershire when the Sharks take on Middlesex at Hove tonight (7pm).

The leg-spinner from Crawley has become one of Sussex’s most consistent performers in the shortest format of the game and Robinson says the England selectors will not be able to ignore him if he continues his hot streak when they pick the side to play New Zealand in a one-off game next month.

Robinson said: “Should England take a look at Will, definitely. Obviously it depends on what they want in the make-up of the team but if they want somebody to bowl those middle overs who has got a good record then Will would fit that criteria.

“From an England point of view he would be useful coming in to bat in the last two or three overs and he’s a good fielder as well so why not? In the shortest format of the game the ability to spin the ball both ways is a big asset.”

Beer has been a regular in Sussex’s limited overs sides for the last few years but has been starved of chances in first class cricket.

Robinson has hinted that could change if the 26-year-old continues to improve at his current rate.

“Will has matured,” added Robinson. “Yards (Mike Yardy) being injured last year helped him as he had to take more responsibility.

“He is in the best place he has ever been which is really exciting. He is consistently getting more pace on the ball which makes him a more attractive option in red ball cricket so our goal is to keep him moving forward.”
