Chris Wright put a huge dent in Sussex’s hopes of securing a third Championship victory of the season against Warwickshire.

Wright picked up three wickets before lunch on the third day at Hove as Sussex slipped to 38-3 in pursuit of 190 to win.

Chris Nash, Luke Wells and Harry Finch all fell cheaply after Sussex had wrapped up the Warwickshire innings inside ten overs in the morning.

Warwickshire were dismissed for 200 having resumed on 180-7 with Chris Jordan claiming two wickets and Steve Magoffin the other.

Jordan had Rikki Clarke caught at second slip for 34 and wrapped up the innings by bowling Boyd Rankin with a yorker.

Opener Ian Westwood – who came in at No.10 due to a suspected broken thumb – put up a brave resistance until he was bowled by Magoffin for two.

A target of 190 was always going to be tricky on a pitch showing signs of variable bounce and it became tougher when Nash was caught miscuing a pull off Wright having made just two.

Wells was badly dropped on 14 by Jonathan Trott but it did not prove too expensive as Ateeq Javid clung on to a reaction catch at short leg when the left-hander had made 19.

Finch followed in Wright’s next over, being bowled for just one by a ball which nipped back and clipped his off stump.
