Sussex seamer Chris Jordan has been named in England’s 15-man squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Jordan’s place in the squad was expected after taking ten wickets in five matches on the recent ODI tour of Sri Lanka.

But there is no place in the party for Sussex team-mate Luke Wright who had been in the provisional 30-man squad.

Wright’s exclusion did not come as a surprise though as he has not featured for his country in any format since pulling out of the World Twenty20 in March through injury.

The decision to axe captain Alistair Cook and leave him out of the squad altogether had raised the possibility of a recall for Wright but the selectors opted to bring in Gary Ballance instead.

Eoin Morgan will captain the side for the tournament which starts in February.

National selector James Whitaker said: “We have had to make some difficult decisions to get to our final squad but firmly believe that the 15 players selected offer the very best chance of success at the World Cup.

“There have been a number of promising performances from players in recent series and it is important that this squad continues to develop their one-day skills quickly and players start to show the sort of consistency needed to succeed regularly on the world stage.”

Wright has also been left out of two Lions squads - coached by Sussex's Mark Robinson - for the tour of South Africa beginning in early January.

Jonathan Trott will captain the four-day side with a captain for the one-day side to be announced at a later date.

Two fast bowlers, Mark Wood of Durham and Matthew Dunn of Surrey, have been added to the provisional squad that was announced in October, and Ben Stokes and Harry Gurney have been included in the squad for the one-day matches following their omission from the World Cup squad.
