Ashley Jackson produced a masterclass from short corners as England enjoyed a big hockey win last night.
The East Grinstead star scored FOUR times, all from set-pieces, to lead an 8-1 rout of Malaysia.
England were being held 1-1 at half-time in the preliminary round fixture.
Jackson scored four of his side’s first five goals and his Grinstead colleague Mark Gleghorne got the sixth with a simple far-post finish.
Sussex player Sophie Bray, who plays for East Grinstead, was on target as England women beat Malaysia 5-0 in their Group B match.
Bray scored the third with a very sharp finish from close range following a short corner.
Lucy Wood, from Horsham, was also involved.
England go for gold in the mixed team badminton today.
But it is unclear whether Heathfield’s Heather Olver will be involved.
Olver played in the qualifying group but was not named in the team which beat India 3-0 in the semis last night. All three rubbers were hotly contested before England secured their place in today’s final against Malaysia (3pm).
England, with Sussex’s Sian Honnor, lost in the women’s bowls fours, going down 12-10 to South Africa.
