Chris Jordan produced a sensational opening spell as Sussex closed in on victory against Warwickshire on the final day at Horsham.

Jordan took three quick wickets – including the prize scalp of Jonathan Trott – to leave the Bears reeling on 10-3 at lunch as they chase 326 to seal an unlikely win.

Sussex still have 67 overs left to claim the seven wickets they need having declared on 245-9 in the morning.

Their hopes of piling on some quick runs were dashed early on as Jordan and Luke Wright departed in the first two overs.

Jeetan Patel had Wright caught at first slip and also claimed the wickets of Ben Brown and James Tredwell to finish with figures of 4-84.

Steffan Piolet made 22 to stretch Sussex’s lead to 325 and when he was out to Boyd Rankin skipper Ed Joyce decided to declare on 245-9.

With 77 overs still left in the day all three results still looked possible but Warwickshire’s chances of chasing down 326 to win were soon left in tatters.

Varun Chopra drove loosely at a ball from Jordan and was caught behind for four and Will Porterfield followed two balls later when he was trapped lbw.

A fine morning got even better when Jordan got a good length ball to leave Trott and find the batsman’s edge having added just one to his first innings 106.
