THERE’S nothing like looking back at the days of youth.

But what are these boys doing in our main picture and who are they talking to?

They seem to be schoolboys or possibly part of a Scout troop. They are talking to two senior figures and one is handing something to one of the youngsters. What is it all about?

Like our other shots on this page, it dates from 1952 and comes from our archive of images.

There’s being young and then there’s being in the prime of your life.

And these women look like they are pleased to be pictured with a dashing chap in front of a light aeroplane.

Could it have landed at Shoreham Airport? The women are in uniform so could they be part of the RAF? Or perhaps another corps?

He looks vaguely familiar, with a touch of a young Duke of Edinburgh about him – or perhaps he’s a film star.

Elsewhere, we have been trying to pin down which road this fire took hold in.

Our best guess is that it’s Middle Street in Brighton. The awning visible to the right of one picture could be the frontage of the Hippodrome.

Whatever the case, the outlet opposite is certainly looking worse for wear, with smoke pouring from its upper windows and firemen busily tackling the flames within. The sign on the front says B Divall.

It’s notable too how big the crowd is in the original pictures – and certainly a lot closer to the action than authorities would let you get today.

Finally, the white building in our last picture is looking healthier. But where is it?

The sign that skirts along the roof of the building says “Pickford Removers And Storers”. It may well be long gone now, along with buildings of similar stature and design, but we hope some readers may remember it.
