WE ARE not sure how many of our readers will have been alive and remember the year 1929 but these pictures offer a fascinating insight nevertheless.

The age of steam was in full swing and our main picture, taken at Brighton Station that year, shows some well-dressed youngsters. Or, as the picture caption states, are they “dwarves”? Perhaps this image carries greater significance than it suggests.

From trains to automobiles – we might look back on the cars of yesteryear as being the vintage sort but what did spectators reckon of these “old crocks” in 1929?

We’ve dug out two images from the London to Brighton Old Crocks Run. Not quite Genevieve, are they? Meanwhile, these two mystery men pictured the same year would not have looked out of place riding such vehicles, but who are they?

Elsewhere, nothing beats a day at the beach but what are these people doing?

The Hanningtons store in Brighton, now no more, was the scene of a big fire in the 1980s.

But here’s a picture of the department store in a different location in Davigdor Road, Hove in 1929. We have tried to guess the junction. Might the site have been reinvented as the rather plush-looking Montefiore Hospital?

Talking of locations, can anyone tell us where this once splendid country house is? It can be seen in the aftermath of a fire and has clearly suffered. We wonder if it was rebuilt or consigned to history.
