St John Ambulance is looking for new youth team volunteers.

The recruits, who need to be 18 or over, will help run the charity's programme for young people.

This includes the cadet scheme where the volunteers will help mentor groups of youngsters aged between five and 17.

There are weekly sessions where the volunteers will teach first aid training, life skills and confidence.

Youth leaders will also have the opportunity to train and make their way up to first aider, which means they can help at events such as Brighton Marathon and Brighton Pride.

Sussex District Youth Officer Katy Tremain said: "Being a youth leader is so rewarding.

"It’s fantastic to see young people develop new skills and grow in confidence."

The youngsters on the schemes are called  cadets and badgers.

The cadets, aged ten to 17, receive first aid training from youth leaders at the weekly meet-ups.

They take part in a programme to help them achieve a "Grand Prior Award", with the chance for them to work with adult volunteers on duty.

The badgers, aged seven to ten, follow a shorter programme aimed at teaching necessary life skills including first aid.

A spokesman for St John Ambulance said: "St John Ambulance are looking for new youth team volunteers to join units throughout Sussex.

"As more young people seek to enrol in the charity's popular youth programme, there are opportunities for new adult volunteers to get involved, learn new skills and make life-long friends.

"No prior first aid or volunteering experience is required for any of these roles as all necessary training will be given at a weekly meeting.

"Applicants must be aged 18 or over and will be required to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

"Those applying to be youth helpers will also be taught first aid so, in time, they can pass on these skills to the young volunteers and, if they wish, go on duty delivering first aid in the community and at events."
