Portslade fight: Eight men arrested after mass brawl

Emergency services descended on Boundary Road, Portslade, following a large altercation between “a group of people” yesterday afternoon.

Eight men have now been arrested in connection with the incident.

Two 19-year-olds, a 20-year-old, a 21-year-old, and two 23-year-olds from Brighton, as well as a 29-year-old from Worthing and a 30-year-old from Oldham, have been arrested on suspicion of affray, violent disorder and grievous bodily harm without intent.

Three men were taken to hospital with two in a critical condition and another who suffered minor injuries.

Sussex Police said a 24-year-old man from Norfolk remains in hospital with serious injuries but is in a stable condition.

Forensics officers put wooden planks in evidence containers. One appeared to have blood on it.

Witnesses said there were two groups fighting.

"It was a little bit scary to watch," said one witness.

“One of them had blood on his face and he was holding his arm.”

They said several men were seen running off towards Portslade Station.

Several ambulances and police attended the incident which happened at around 2.15pm

An air ambulance was also called to a nearby park.

Paramedics could be seen in HB Barbers.

Sussex Police said there will be a continued police presence in the area while enquiries continue.

Chief Inspector Jim Smith said: “A fast-moving investigation is underway into this incident, but it is believed that all individuals involved are known to one another and there is no threat to the wider public.

“There is likely to be an increased police presence in the area for some time, and I would like to thank for the public for their patience and understanding while this is ongoing.
