TV and film star Toby Jones performs DJ set at Brighton pub

Toby Jones wowed crowds with a DJ set at the Prince Albert in Brighton last night.

The 57-year-old recently starred in hit ITV series Mr Bates vs The Post Office which aired in January.

Pubgoers said it was absolutely packed and praised Jones for his range of music.

Felix Farrow went for a last minute drink and stumbled upon the actor’s intimate DJ set at the pub in Trafalgar Street.

He said: “I had absolutely no idea at all that Toby Jones was performing and honestly we hadn't even planned to go to the Prince Albert until the very last minute.

“Just before we walked in the door, a mate in the smoking area tapped me on the shoulder and told me he was in there. He was very much keeping himself to himself.

“The vibes were lovely and the place was absolutely packed, with everyone just enjoying themselves rather than bothering him for photos.

“It was a massive mix of stuff he was playing, all from his own records.”

The performance was to raise awareness for Brighton grassroots music venues under threat of closure.

The Prince Albert said it was to support venues “not only in Brighton but up and down the country”.

Jones has been in dozens of films and TV shows including BBC’s Detectorists and Captain America: The First Avenger. He also voiced Dobby in two Harry Potter films.

He was joined by actor Ben Miles who has previously starred in the Crown in 2016.

The pair were performing under the name The Plasticons and their set was between 8pm and 11pm.

Jones’s role as Alan Bates in the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office was widely praised and helped raise awareness of the British Post Office scandal where hundreds of subpostmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft, false accounting or fraud due to a faulty computer system called Horizon.  

The Prince Albert was under threat from a four-storey development next door in October last year.

The 175-year-old pub campaigned against the plans and they were eventually refused by Brighton and Hove City councillors.

Fatboy Slim also performed a set in support of the pub and venues in the city.
