Residents have shared their surprise after an off licence which had misspelt signs for years got a new misspelt sign.

The shop at the bottom of Islingword Road in Hanover, Brighton, was an off licence for many years called A & A Newsagent. It had signs advertising its “cigerettes” and “confectionary” on sale.

After Mel’s Ironing Parlour closed down recently, the unit was acquired by new owners and has now been given a lick of bright green paint and a new sign saying “Mini Market Islinword”, missing the G from the road name.

Hanover residents took to Facebook to share their thoughts - and many found it hilarious.

Rebecca Chester said: “Maybe the G is inside running the place?”

David Jacobs said: “At least they haven’t spelt it wood instead of word at the end like most people do on social media.”

Some were more cynical about the misspelling, suggesting it could be deliberate.

Richard Blennerhassett said: “Any publicity is good publicity”

Others were less bothered about the spelling and more concerned about the vibrant colour.

Rob Dawes said:  "They have rather ruined the aesthetic of quite a pleasant looking shop there too. I wonder if those shutters have planning permission?”

The shop was unavailable for comment.
