Nearly £60,000 in compensation was requested by drivers whose cars were damaged by potholes on Brighton’s roads.
Almost 200 drivers requested compensation from Brighton and Hove City Council in 2023 for damage caused to their vehicles by potholes or worn-out roads, new figures show.
A Freedom of Information request revealed the amount of damage drivers claimed for in the past 12 months.
Drivers are able to claim money back from local councils if their car has been damaged by a pothole or worn-out part of road that the authority is responsible for maintaining.

Authorities such as Brighton and Hove City Council are obligated to pay compensation if a car is damaged by a pothole that has been reported to them on a road that they manage.
In total, 187 drivers requested compensation from the council from the beginning of 2023 to the middle of January 2024 when the FOI request was submitted.
These drivers requested a total of £58,093.25 from Brighton and Hove City Council.
Brighton and Hove City Council did not respond to a request for comment.
