A new primary school has started being built after planning permission was approved.

Vistry Group and Miller Homes have said that construction on the new Chichester school began at the end of January.

This one-form entry school is part of the Minerva Heights development, just off Old Broyle Road, in the west of Chichester.

The development will also have 750 new homes built in the first phase of plans for 1,600 homes on land west of Chichester.

West Sussex County Council have proposed that the new school will be the site for the Jessie Younghusband Primary School, which is currently in Woodlands Lane.

There will be space for 210 students at the school and developers have said the school will be ready for the new term in September 2024.

To celebrate the beginning of construction, a ceremony was held at the end of January when the first spade was plunged into the ground.

Chichester MP and Secretary of State for Education Gillian Keegan attended.

Melanie Richards, sales and marketing director for Vistry Southern, said: "I would like to thank everyone who took time out to join us at Minerva Heights to mark what was a very important day for the community in Chichester.

"The creation of a new school will be a key part of the legacy that Minerva Heights will deliver for the city.

"We are proud to be working alongside Miller Homes to deliver not only hundreds of much-needed high-quality new homes for Chichester but also to fund the provision of this new primary school which will be built by Ascia Construction.

"The school will provide an exceptional state-of-the-art environment where children can begin their education and learn the skills they need to prepare them for life."

The new primary school will help improve education facilities in Chichester.
