People have expressed anger at plans for over 200 homes to be built on the South Downs.

Bellway Homes unveiled plans to build 247 homes just west of Storrington Road in the village of Thakeham in West Sussex.

According to planning documents, 86 of these homes will be affordable.

Since news of the proposals was published in an article by The Argus, people have expressed concern over the plans on social media.

Carole Spicer said: "I know the area well and went to school with a lot of people who lived near there.

"None of us live there now as housing is unaffordable.

"If it was affordable it would be different.

"This village is served by local amenities that have not increased since loads of new buildings went up.

"I am all for affordable housing but as previously stated most local people live away because of prices."

Derek Wright also opposed the plans and believes homes should be built away from the South Downs.

He said: "Why destroy the South Downs when there are so many empty buildings just in Brighton alone, all those empty office blocks could be made into flats now more people are working from home."

Despite objections and fears that there is not "the capacity" for this increase in the number of homes, some people supported the idea of more housing in the area.

Emma Cooke said: "I'm all for it as long as it's social or affordable for many of us that as of yet have been unable to get on the housing ladder."

Residents can express their views on the proposed development until February 8 on the Horsham District Planning portal.
