A university student has been charged with a terrorism offence after a speech at a pro-Palestine protest last month.
Hanin Barghouti, 22, of Eaton Grove in Hove, has been charged with one count of supporting a proscribed organisation - namely Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah (Hamas), contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Hamas is designated as a terrorist group by the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and the European Union.
Barghouti, a student at the University of Sussex, was arrested after a rally in Brighton city centre on October 8 - the day after Hamas militants launched attacks on Israel, killing hundreds of people and abducting others.
She is alleged to have made a speech at the protest.
Barghouti has been released on bail and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 17.
