Engineers are inspecting the burnt out Royal Albion hotel ahead of demolition.

Demolition crews have been setting up equipment and inspecting the 200-year-old building in King’s Road, Brighton, over the morning.

The Argus understands that demolition is more likely to start tomorrow.

Engineers were looking at an asbestos reinspection survey from December last year which was done by Environtec, one of the UK’s biggest asbestos specialists.

Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed asbestos was in the textured ceiling coatings used in the building, which went up in flames on Saturday.

The main crane appeared to be testing its hydraulic arm ahead of demolition.

It is expected to take between two to three weeks once works start.

The council said there is “unlikely to be any significant risk of exposure to asbestos following this fire”.

Firefighters have been damping down hot spots in the hotel.

Engineers are hoping to keep the two pillars with lions on top intact but the facade is expected to be knocked down.

The first skips and a forklift arrived at around 10am yesterday.
