A grey, wet and windy evening didn’t dampen sprits on the first night of Love Supreme on Friday.

In fact, it made the colourful lights of the fairgrounds rides and arenas even brighter.

The first night of a a big weekender is always filled with anticipation, early acts heard from across the fields while fans pile into the campsite all competing for a space for their tents.

But once we’d pitched our temporary home, we ventured into the unknown buzzing with excitement.

We started with Pip Millett, new to the neo soul scene but with a sound that is as if she’s been around for decades.

Millet was absolutely sublime, and clearly incredibly happy to be there.

Next, we started at Gabriels, joining their “Love Supreme church” for an evening while the band blending groovy soulful vibes finished off with frontman Jacob Lusk’s epic vocals – who arrived in Sussex fresh from a performance with Elton John at Glastonbury last weekend.

They absolutely ran away with it last night, and we couldn’t help but feel the festival may have already peaked on the first night. It can’t get any better than this, surely?

Later, we headed to Russ Dewbury at the Supreme Standards stage, a set that was a joy to watch.

In the bright lights of the big top there was space to boogie - and we needed it.

Dewbury, with some 30 years service in the industry to his name, is a master of his craft. Supported by percussion artists, with bongos and even cowbells, his jazzy beats were irresistible. Towards the end of the set, he upped the ante, adding more drums and mixing classic jazz tunes with fresh bass.

And while it seems brief, this took us to the end of the day at 2am. It was a slow crawl back to the tents with an even slower crawl out from them this morning.

Today promises to be a huge day, with FKJ and Greentea Peng particular highlights.
