Multiple fire engines are dealing with a blaze at a “derelict nursing home” on a rural road.

Crews from East and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are attending the fire which broke out this morning with six pumps and an aerial ladder in attendance.

Fire services are asking residents near Plawhatch Lane in Sharpthorne, near East Grinstead to close their windows due to the risk of smoke. Drivers are also asked to avoid the area.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said on Twitter: “We are dealing with a fire involving a property off Plawhatch Lane near Sharpthorne. If you live nearby please keep your windows and doors closed. We would ask drivers to avoid the area to allow crews to work safely.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using three main jets, two fognail branches and a hydrant to extinguish the fire. There is still a lot of smoke in the area, please continue to keep doors and windows closed.”

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed that the blaze was taking place in a derelict property believed to be an old nursing home.
