The A23 is partially closed southbound following a car crash.
Police and ambulances, along with fire crews from both sides of the county, are on their way to the site of a collision on the southbound carriageway of Brighton and Hove's major artery.
The crash happened at Dale Hill near the junction with A281.
Fire crews were called at 2.39pm and have been told there is at least one car smoking.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Emergency services are dealing with a single vehicle collision on the A23 Pyecombe at 2.38pm.
"A car has hit the central reservation and a street lamp by the Texaco garage northbound. Lane two of the A23 is currently closed.
"It is not known if anyone is hurt."
