STICK insects, chickens and a guinea pig proved themselves unlikely allies as they took top prizes at a local fair.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes, a bearded dragon and a snake were also among the prizewinners at the St Lawrence Fair Pet Show in Hurstpierpoint.

Sarah Solomon, manager of the fair's sponsor Heath Vets, said: “The show was a great success and lots of fun.

"We love being part of the community and The St Lawrence Fair’s Pet Show is a fantastic way for people to show off their beloved pets and enjoy lots of tea and cake."

The small pets’ competition was won by Lydia Babister with her chickens Scrambled and Pepper.

Second place went to Emelia Solomon with Henry and Hetty the stick insects, while third place was awarded to Lauren and Jacob Stenning with their guinea pig Katniss.

The Pat Venables Cup was too close to call and was awarded to joint winners Ethan Deeley with Thor the Bearded Dragon and Natalie Deeley with Loki the Grey Banded King Snake.

Youngsters Connie and Evie came third in both the junior handler and The Wright Veteran Cup categories, with Sid the Greyhound.

Chief the Pomeranian dog won the Heath Cup for best condition.
