THE HAPPY Mondays and The Levellers will both be celebrating silver anniversaries with a pair of back to back shows on Hastings Pair.

Madchester band The Happy Mondays will be performing Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches in full when they lead up a pair of gigs on the end of the newly reopened pier.

Brighton folk punk band The Levellers will be performing a show the day after celebrating the 25th birthday of second album Levelling the Land, also by performing it in full.

The Happy Monday's third record is considered to be the peak of their highly influential career by critics and features tracks such as Step On and Kinky Afro.

The Levellers second album gained platinum status and features tracks such as the Battle of Beanfield and Fifteen Years.

For the Happy Mondays show, support will be provided by electronic band The Orb, who will be performing Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld in full - also for its 25th anniversary.

Also on the bill is Formation, an up and coming indie electronica act.

The Levellers will be supported by indie rock band Turin Brakes, who are touring their seventh album Lost Property, along with Nottingham folk-punk outfit Ferocious Dog.

The concert is set up by Brighton-based promoter One Inch Badge who also run the Together The People Festival in Preston Park.

These two gigs follow the opening gala of the pier on May 21 which will see local boy Suggs and Madness start the pier's summer season with a Baggy Trousers themed bang.

Last week Hastings Pier reopened to the public after it underwent £14.2 million worth of refurbishment.

A spokesman for the Hastings Pier Charity (HPC), which runs it, said: "We hope it will re-energise Hastings, not just as a tourist destination, but it gives a fantastic new facility to local people, as well."

The Victorian structure was opened in 1872 but enjoyed its iconic period in the sixties and seventies, hosting bands such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, as well as being the location of Syd Barrett’s last ever show with Pink Floyd.

The pier was severely damaged in 1990 and was closed to the public in 1999, briefly reopening between 2002 and 2008 before closing again.

Efforts to get the landmark repaired and reopened were dealt a blow when a fire destroyed the majority of its superstructure in October 2010.

However the cast iron frame was deemed salvageable and after six years it reopened.

Tickets for the Happy Mondays show on September 17 and The Levellers on September 18 are on sale now.
