THE University of Brighton has been awarded a 10-year lease to run a café which it will also use as a training venue for tourism and leisure students.

The university will invest £280,000 into the extensively-refurbished café in Princes Park in Eastbourne after the deal was approved by the Liberal Democrat controlled cabinet at Eastbourne Borough Council.

The extensive café makeover includes new decking overlooking the lake and is part of a £900,000 project to enhance Princes Park.

Wider improvements include a pedestrian link from the promenade, via a new zebra crossing, to a new entrance, making it easier for people to access the park, particularly from the seafront.

A central plaza will also link the park entrance to the café.

Princes Park enhancements are being funded from a £1.83 million Coastal Communities Funds award that also includes improvements to Sea Houses Square plaza and building fronts in Seaside, which will create 118 new jobs.

Councillor Steve Wallis, lead cabinet member for Place Services, said: “This agreement will secure significant investment into the café, helping to deliver a high quality service for local people and visitors in a modern, attractive venue.

“Alongside this, it will create excellent training and job opportunities for students. Eastbourne Borough Council both welcome and thank the University of Brighton for their commitment to the refurbished café.

“On a wider note, the University of Brighton is an asset to the town and their students bring both vibrancy and income to Eastbourne. ”

Julie Barker, director of accommodation and hospitality services at the University of Brighton, said: “This is an exciting collaboration which offers an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their employability skills.

"The café will offer a range of food and beverages in contemporary surroundings which will be a great asset for the town, visitors and the local community.”
