CHOCOLATE is always a good way to get schoolchild's attention.

But this time it came with an unexpected message.

Staff at the Raw Health Bar, based in Brighton's Open Market, led a workshop at St Bartholomew's School on how to make raw chocolate bars, a healthier alternative to the milky, sugary stuff.

Students at the school in Ann Street, Brighton, helped co-owner Dandy Christofi make chocolate from cacao powder and natural sweeteners such as the Peruvian Lucuma fruit, and then feasted on what they made.

Ms Christofi said: "The children loved it, they really loved it. They are the best judges as they always tell the truth - they will tell you if they don't like it."

The workshop comes amid efforts by authorities around the country to reduce the amount of sugar children consume.

Ms Christofi, who runs the Raw Health Bar with Ray Edwards, said: "I think it is important to show children natural alternatives because people are exposed to so much sugar; you will find it in most products in some form."

The Raw Health Bar also produces superfood juices, organic juices and more as part of its mission to promote healthy eating.

Ms Christofi said: "I think people in Brighton are open to it and they want to find out more about living more healthy lives."
