THESE picture shows what can happen if you get behind the wheel while more than four times the drink-drive limit.

The woman driving had first driven into an off-duty police officer's car in nearby Elphinstone Road. The officers shouted at her to stop but instead she drove off.

She turned into Baldslow Road, hit a parked car and then reversed at such speed that when she hit a road sign at the junction with Sherwood Close her Daihatsu Sirion lifted off the ground and smashed into the window of a block of sheletered accommodation.

Fortunately no one was hurt after the driver, Sue Dean, went out of control at the junction of Baldslow Road and Sherwood Close in Hastings at 11.35am on June 11.

But the 52-year-old has been given a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving.

When police breathalysed her she had 150 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - more than four times the 35 microgrammes legal limit.

Dean, of Hurrell Road, Hastings, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and failing to stop after an accident when she appeared at Hastings Magistrates' Court on 1 July.

She was banned from driving for three years and given a 16-week suspended prison sentence.

She was also ordered to do 300 hours of community service and to pay £235 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.

Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, of Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: "It was very lucky that no one was hurt because of the driving of Dean.

"She must have known how utterly unfit to drive she was but still took the decision to put herself and everyone else on the roads in danger by getting behind the wheel.

"She could have easily caused a serious crash or knocked down a pedestrian as she clearly had no control of her vehicle.

"We need the community's help to get people who think the drink-drive laws do not apply to them off the roads and I would urge anyone who sees someone who appears unfit to drive to contact us so we can take action."

A total of 19 people have so far been convicted of offences as part of the campaign.
