BRIGHTON-dwellers are prouder of their home than anywhere else in the UK, according to a new survey.

YouGov found 91% of Brightonians are fairly proud or very proud of where they live, compared to a UK average of 79%.

Edinburgh was second in the survey, while the lowest performing city was Nottingham, which only 62% of people said they were proud to call their home.

Mary Wheeler, senior research executive at YouGov CityBus, said: “Whether it is the sea air and iconic beaches, lovely locals or a diverse cultural landscape, it is clear those in Brighton have a good deal to be rightly proud of.”

The poll compared the opinions of residents in 10 cities around the UK, with 100 people from each city quizzed about different parts of life there.

Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Manchester and Nottingham were also part of the survey.

Culture, people, restaurants, transport links and nightlife were among the highest-rated aspects of living in Brighton.

Residents were the most likely to approve of the stereotypes associated with their city, and 53% of locals plan to stay in the city.

In comparison, 48% of Londoners want to get out of the capital, the highest in the country.

Despite their love for the city, only 22% of those polled had lived in Brighton their entire life.

And only 16% of Brightonians were happy with job opportunities, compared to 45% of Londoners. The only two cities where job opportunities were rated worse are Nottingham and Belfast.

A separate piece of research conducted by Senior Railcard found Brighton’s retirees are among the happiest in the country.

Those questioned said they were enjoying their retirement, with 80% saying they liked it more than they expected.

An average retirement in Brighton involves two holidays a year, a glass of wine at 5.05pm and a disposable income of £333 a month.

Andrew Robertson, of the Senior Railcard, said: “Our poll showed that Brighton adults in their sixties, seventies and eighties are determined to make the most of life in retirement and have no intention of slowing down.”
