A SUSSEX brewery has been named as one of the best in the world.

Burning Sky Brewery was rated among the top five new brewers in the world by American website Ratebeer.

Burning Sky Brewery, based in The Street, Firle, was rated named fourth in the countdown, beating more than 3,800 other new breweries.

Head brewer Mark Tranter, 42, said: “It is a massive honour and it shows people what we are doing, especially as we do not worry about what is fashionable.”

He had previously worked as the head brewer for Dark Star, producing The Argus’ own Argus Ale.

The Burning Sky Brewery, which focuses on pale ales, saisons and oak barrel beers, started up in 2013.

As a celebration of their first anniversary, the brewery released a new beer that had been aged in chardonnay barrels.

Mr Tranter said: “We do not try to emulate anyone else. There are bigger breweries around us but we like to think we provide something different.”

There are four members of staff at the brewery, with two full-time and two part-time staff working to provide ales and beers for all over Sussex.

On their website, Ratebeer said: “News that Mark was setting up his own brewery excited everybody in the know.

“Being the best new UK brewer and fourth out of 3,800 openings in the last 15 months will be the icing on the cake for an award-laden year for him.”

The website is described as “the most accurate and most-visited source for beer information”.

Established in 2000, RateBeer is based on consumer-driven ratings, relying on hundreds of thousands of members from 100 countries.
