The A27 eastbound has reopened almost four hours after it was closed following a crash.

Two vans and a lorry collided closing part of the A27 eastbound and causing long queues.

Emergency services were called to the A27 eastbound between the A23 at Patcham and the A270 at Lewes Road at shortly before 1pm.

The road was shut to allow the Kent and Sussex air ambulance to land.

The westbound carriageway reopened but the eastbound carriageway remained closed for almost four hours causing significant delays on the A27 eastbound and A23 southbound.

Eye witnesses said that the van had been crushed underneath the rear of the lorry and that the accident was causing huge tailbacks.

The driver of a transit van has taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious but not thought to be life threatening injuries in a land ambulance. The driver of the lorry was also taken to the Royal Sussex Hospital with slight injuries.

At just before 5pm, Sussex Police reopened the road.
