Brighton and Hove City Council has announced it will close a housing office at the end of this week following health and safety concerns over the state of the building.
The council has deemed that the offices in Oxford Street, Brighton, are no longer safe for residents to visit or for staff to work inside.
The Argus understands that a recent structural survey revealed problems with the building’s roof, brickwork and windows which are at risk of falling out.
The recent wet weather has caused a major deterioration in the state of the building in the last few weeks.
Residents with housing enquiries will now have to use remaining offices in Lavender Street in Brighton, Portslade Town Hall or Whitehawk Community Hub.
Councillor Bill Randall, chair of the council’s housing committee, said: “I apologise to residents for the short notice of this decision.
"We are contacting everyone who regularly uses the Oxford St Housing Office this week to let them know about this decision and alternative ways they can contact the service and make payments.
“I have asked officers as a matter of urgency to find alternative arrangements other than Lavender Street for tenants who need face to face appointments with our housing team. “
If you will be affected by the closure call 01273 544530 or email neil.vowles@theargus.co.uk.
