Walkers at a beauty spot are being warned to be on their guard after an ominous crack appeared on a cliff face.

Amanda Death was walking near Seaford Head on Saturday with her daughter when she spotted the crack at the edge of the cliffs and took a photo.

She shared the picture with the Newhaven Coastguard, who posted it on its Facebook page with a warning to people to be aware.

Mrs Death, 41, from Seaford, said: “I was just taking different pictures of my daughter when I saw the crack.

“I thought it looked a bit unsafe. I’m not sure if walkers can get anywhere near to that point or not but I just wanted to highlight it so people are aware.

“It is worth just keeping a close eye on it.”

The cliffs at Seaford Head are gradually eroding and there are often big falls of chalk.

In February the Coastguard warned people to stay well away from cliff edges after a series of chalk falls at Seaford Head and Birling Gap further along the coast.

Torrential rain and huge cliffs were responsible for the damage to the lower part of the cliff at Seaford Head, leaving a thin and dangerously weak ledge at the top.

Birling Gap experienced seven years’ worth of erosion in two months at the start of the year, resulting in numerous cliff falls and multiple cracks opening on the cliff top.

The unprecedented level of erosion left the National Trust site and the former Coastguard cottages teetering dangerously close to the edge and under the threat of collapse.
