TODAY we turn the spotlight on Kelvin Newman, founder and Managing Director at Rough Agenda, the company behind the highly-successful Brighton SEO.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the office?

I'm a huge Twitter addict. Our business had a hashtag before it even had a website, so my first job is to check in and see what the world of digital marketing has been saying on Twitter.

What work worries keep you awake at night?

Our event started as a few people meeting in a pub and we've keep that relaxed atmosphere as we've grown to 3500 people in the Brighton Centre. I do worry though about losing that feeling and becoming another samey and boring business event.

Do you lunch in or out of the office?

I'm one of those annoying types who brings something tasty in from outside and eats it at my desk. Katsu is my current favourite!

What’s the proudest you’ve been with a recent piece of work?

Last April the hashtag for our event was trending on Twitter, which was amazing but what blew me away was more people were talking about it than Obama's visit to the UK which was happening the same day!

Where do you network?

Online! It might sound a little antisocial but it's never been easier to strike up a relationship with people who you would like to work with using social networks.

How do you exercise?

Nowhere near as much as I should! When I get on a health kick I run everyday for a week then take six weeks off!

What qualities do you look for when looking to hire a new recruit?

I'm a big fan of working with freelancers and contractors rather than taking someone on for the sake of it! That way you can work with someone who really knows their onions and rather than trying to fill a person's time with whatever you can.

What is the best thing about business in Brighton and Hove?

It's a great place for us to host an event because people always want to visit the culture, the pubs, the beach and everything else that all adds into this really attractive place to work and visit

What one thing would improve the quality of your working life?

I'm really concerned about work life balance and really lucky not to have to work the long hours common to most business people but I do wish I could switch off a bit more outside of work.

What would be your absolute dream job?

I've always thought the DJs on the pier or at the Amex have one of the best jobs in the world!

What is your top tip for business success?

Learn fast, the quicker you try things out, fail or succeed the quicker you can improve. The idea of marginal gains as exposed by British Cycling really appeals to me.
