THESE are the three designs in the running for a new skatepark.

A total of £200,000 on revamping the skatepark in Malling recreation ground, just behind the Tesco superstore in Lewes.

The plan is a boost for young people after their skatepark was closed.

In July the Argus reported how the volunteer-run Lewes Skatehouse will move from the Phoenix Industrial Estate in North Street, Lewes, to a new all-weather facility in Denton Island in Newhaven some seven miles away.

Lewes District Council is asking for views on the three designs, submitted by Wheelscape Skateparks, Canvas, and Concreate Skateparks.

They have been submitted according to a brief shaped by local skaters, who were invited to a workshop in May.

Councillor Andy Smith, leader of Lewes District Council, said “It was great to meet so many skaters when they came along to the initial workshop earlier this year and it provided the ideal opportunity to share ideas on what they want the new skatepark to include.

"They are really enthusiastic about our plans and the Council is doing everything it can to turn their ideas into reality.”

In its design statement submitted to the council, Canvas highlighted the "many unique obstacles" it had created in its plan.

It adds: "Challenging features have been included both large in height and small in height, allowing for varied abilities and use."

Iain Young, design and construction director at Concreate Skateparks, said his company would provide a "highly thought-out" park, adding: "[It] has been designed with progression in mind. There is something here for the smallest child/beginner to the most proficient of adult user.

"The variety of features provided means that there is a lot to keep users captivated and therefore eliminates boredom that can set in in a park that repeats features."

Wheelscape pointed to some of its design's unique points including a street feature inspired by the Cuilfail Spiral sculpture at the Cuilfail tunnel roundabout.

They added: "Wheelscape have provided a completely unique, diverse and exciting skatepark that will appeal to a wide range of users and abilities for many years to come.

"With several details and features that have been directly influenced by local theming, it will have a completely bespoke look and feel.

"It combines several styles of parks within a circuit of good flow, as well as individual areas that complement one another, each with their own distinctive appearance and flow."
